Job summary

Communicate Recruitment is seeking a Database Administrator (BI Support) in the Winelands Area, Cape Town. You will maintain reliable, secure, and high-performing database environments supporting ETL, data warehouses, dashboards, and reporting platforms.

The role covers monitoring, backups, security, change management, and continuous improvement, with opportunities to work with SSIS/SSRS/SSAS and Power BI in cloud-enabled environments.

Qualifications

• National Diploma, B-Tech, or Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
• 2–3 years of experience in database administration, BI support, data management, or IT support.
• Understanding of SQL fundamentals and relational databases.
• Basic database troubleshooting skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; exposure to Power BI, SSIS, SSRS, or SSAS advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Monitor SQL Server performance, availability, growth, disk space usage, and overall health.
• Investigate database alerts, failed jobs, and performance issues.
• Conduct routine health checks and preventative maintenance activities.
• Escalate risks and incidents with clear documentation and impact assessments.
• Monitor and support SQL Agent jobs, SSIS packages, scheduled processes, and data refresh activities.
• Investigate ETL failures by reviewing logs, permissions, source system availability, and dependencies.
• Assist with job reruns, validation, and incident resolution.
• Maintain database objects such as tables, views, and stored procedures for ETL processes.
• Validate database backups and ensure successful completion per backup schedules.
• Participate in restore testing and disaster recovery exercises.
• Monitor maintenance plans and identify failed or missed activities.
• Maintain backup/recovery documentation and evidence.
• Manage database access requests and permission changes.
• Support access reviews, audits, and compliance activities.
• Identify inactive accounts, excessive permissions, and security risks.
• Ensure all changes are approved and documented.
• Assist with database deployments, script execution, and object migrations.
• Maintain implementation records, version control references, and rollback documentation.
• Support testing, environment refreshes, and post-deployment validation.
• Participate in change management processes and controlled releases.
• Maintain operational documentation, runbooks, and support procedures.
• Support governance, audit, security, and operational standards.
• Contribute to knowledge-sharing and process improvements.
• Resolve incidents and service requests related to database access, failed jobs, data refresh failures, and performance concerns.
• Assist with root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
• Identify opportunities to automate, optimize, and standardize processes.
