Database Administrator (BI Support)

Salary: R40 000 - R50 000 per month
Are you passionate about data, databases, and business intelligence? We're looking for a Database Administrator (DBA) to join our BI and Data Platform team. As a DBA, you will play a key role in maintaining reliable, secure, and high-performing database environments that support ETL processes, data warehouses, dashboards, reporting platforms, and operational analytics.
Key Responsibilities
Database Administration & Monitoring
- Monitor SQL Server performance, availability, database growth, disk space utilization, and overall system health.
- Investigate database alerts, failed jobs, and performance issues.
- Conduct routine health checks and preventative maintenance activities.
- Escalate risks and service-impacting incidents with clear documentation and impact assessments.
ETL & Data Platform Support
- Monitor and support SQL Agent jobs, SSIS packages, scheduled processes, and data refresh activities.
- Investigate ETL failures by reviewing logs, permissions, source system availability, and process dependencies.
- Assist with job reruns, validation activities, and incident resolution.
- Maintain database objects such as tables, views, and stored procedures used within ETL processes.
Backup, Recovery & Business Continuity
- Validate database backups and ensure successful completion according to backup schedules.
- Participate in restore testing and disaster recovery exercises.
- Monitor database maintenance plans and identify failed or missed activities.
- Maintain documentation and evidence related to backup and recovery testing.
Security & Access Management
- Manage database access requests and permission changes.
- Support access reviews, audits, and compliance activities.
- Identify inactive accounts, excessive permissions, and security risks.
- Ensure all changes are properly approved and documented.
Change & Release Support
- Assist with database deployments, script execution, and object migrations.
- Maintain implementation records, version control references, and rollback documentation.
- Support testing, environment refreshes, and post-deployment validation activities.
- Participate in change management processes and controlled releases.
Documentation & Governance
- Maintain operational documentation, runbooks, and support procedures.
- Support compliance with governance, audit, security, and operational standards.
- Contribute to knowledge-sharing initiatives and process improvements.
Operational Support & Continuous Improvement
- Resolve incidents and service requests relating to:
- Database access issues
- Failed SQL Agent jobs
- Data refresh failures
- Database performance concerns
- ETL-related database issues
- Assist with root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Identify opportunities to automate, optimize, and standardize processes.

Requirements
- National Diploma, B-Tech, Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent qualification in IT, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
- 2-3 years of experience in database administration, BI support, data management, or IT support.
- Understanding of SQL fundamentals and relational databases.
- Basic database troubleshooting skills.
- Strong attention to detail and analytical thinking.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Exposure to Power BI, SSIS, SSRS, or SSAS will be advantageous.
