Job description

We are seeking a technically skilled Composite Design Draftsman to produce 3D models, 2D drawings, mould tools, layup documentation, and production‑ready composite part details.

This individual will support our engineers, composite manufacturing team, and tooling fabricators to ensure composite parts are accurate, manufacturable, lightweight, and consistent.

This role is essential to ensuring our composite structures meet mechanical, aesthetic, and certification standards while enabling smooth production. This role reports to the Engineering Manager.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Composite Part & Assembly Drafting:
  • Create accurate 3D CAD models and 2D drawings of composite components, assemblies, and sub‑structures.
  • Develop mould layout drawings, surface models, and trim templates.
  • Prepare draft angles, parting lines, and laminate stack‑up details in collaboration with engineers
Mould & Tooling Documentation:
  • Produce fabrication drawings for masters, plugs, moulds, fixtures, and trim jigs
  • Ensure tooling designs consider manufacturability, repeatability, and material selection (GFRP, CFRP aluminium, steel, high‑temp tooling boards).
  • Support mould design reviews with the composites production team.
Production Support:
  • Work directly with the composite shop to refine layup manuals, cure cycle documentation, and trimming guides.
  • Incorporate shop-floor feedback to reduce rework and improve part consistency.
  • Update drawings for production improvements, NCR resolutions, and process developments.
Engineering Collaboration:
  • Translate engineering requirements into accurate composite documentation packages
  • Assist engineers in developing laminate schedules, reinforcement details, and structural design changes
  • Contribute to weight‑reduction and manufacturability improvement initiatives
Configuration Control & Standards:
  • Maintain up‑to‑date composite drawings in the company’s PDM system.
  • Ensure revision control, numbering conventions, and drafting standards are consistently applied.
  • Establish and maintain composite‑specific drafting templates, symbols, and best practices.
Essential requirements:
  • N4/N5 or higher in Drafting or Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • 2–4 years of experience in composite drafting or modelling (aerospace, marine, or automotive preferred)
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
  • Ability to work with complex freeform surfaces and maintain high‑quality model integrity.
  • Understanding of composite materials, layup processes, mould design, and cure cycles.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and engineering documentation practices.
  • Good at communicating written technical information
  • Attention to detail is vital
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience in composite tooling, surfacing, or trim fixture design.
  • Familiarity with vacuum bagging, infusion, and wet layup methods.
  • Knowledge of drafting and mechanical design principles.
  • Exposure to CNC pattern-making or nesting software.
  • Hands‑on experience building composite parts (advantageous).
