Job summary

Weylandts is seeking a Mid-weight Draughtsman to produce accurate 3D models and detailed shop drawings for furniture production. You will translate concepts into production-ready documentation and manage BOMs, materials, and joinery decisions.

You will collaborate with design, production, and technical teams to drive projects from concept to completion, maintaining version-controlled drawing libraries and ensuring deadlines are met.

Qualifications

• 5–10 years of relevant experience in technical furniture design.
• Formal qualification in Drafting, Industrial Design, or related field (3‑year diploma or higher).
• Excellent technical drawing skills and proficiency in SolidWorks and Fusion 360.
• Any PDM experience is advantageous.
• Understanding of woodworking techniques, joinery methods, and manufacturing processes.
• Experience with CNC machines or programming is advantageous.
• Proven ability to manage time, meet deadlines, and drive projects from concept to production.
• Comfortable communicating with both creative teams and factory staff.
• A self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
• A valid driver’s license and reliable transport are required.

Job description

Job Purpose:

The Mid-weight Draughtsman is responsible for preparing accurate 3D models, detailed shop drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOM) to support efficient furniture production. The role requires strong technical skills in CAD software, a good understanding of manufacturing processes, and the ability to translate design concepts into production-ready documentation.

This position also involves collaboration with production teams and cross-departmental leadership to ensure the smooth execution of projects from concept to completion. The Mid-Weight Draughtsman will report to the Technical Manager.

Key Accountabilities:

1. Technical Design & Drawing Accuracy (Core Responsibility)

Convert concept designs into detailed, accurate technical drawings and 3D models, ensuring designs are production-ready.

Prepare comprehensive design packs and Bills of Materials (BOMs), ensuring all components are correctly specified and aligned with material and cost requirements.

Evaluate and recommend suitable materials, fittings, and joinery methods for new and existing designs, balancing practicality, quality, and production feasibility.

1. Prototype Support & Production Alignment

Brief approved designs to in-house WFCF and WFCU teams for prototyping.

Drive and oversee the prototyping process, ensuring alignment with design intent, production feasibility, and quality standards.

Work hands-on with production and machine operators to troubleshoot and refine prototypes, ensuring designs are translated effectively into physical products.

3.Drawing & Technical Data Management

Develop and maintain a digital library of technical drawings across all furniture ranges, ensuring version control and accessibility for production teams.

Maintain updates to drawings and BOMs following design revisions or material changes.

1. Collaboration & Process Contribution

Collaborate with designers, technical managers, and production teams to ensure smooth workflow, feasibility, and timely project completion.

Support continuous improvement initiatives by providing practical insights from prototyping and production feedback.

Technical Skills:

• 5–10 years of relevant experience in technical furniture design, preferably across solid timber and wood-based materials.


• A formal qualification in Drafting, Industrial Design, or a related field (3-year diploma or higher).


• Excellent technical drawing skills and proficiency in SolidWorks and Fusion 360 (or similar CAD software).
