Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Chief Mine Surveyor to lead the underground surveying team near Bloemfontein, Free State. You will direct survey operations, ensure accuracy of mine plans, and ensure regulatory compliance in a demanding mining environment.

You will implement advanced surveying tools, collaborate with geology and engineering teams, and drive safety and quality in all surveying activities. A senior professional with 10+ years in underground mining is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or National Diploma in Mine Surveying or Geomatics.
• Professional registration as a Professional Mine Surveyor (Pr.Min.Surv) with SAGC is mandatory.
• 10+ years of extensive experience in mine surveying, with underground focus.
• Proven expertise with robotic total stations, laser scanners and related software.

Responsibilities

• Establish, maintain, and manage the primary control network for all underground mining operations.
• Oversee detailed survey and mapping of underground excavations, including development ends, stopes, and infrastructure.
• Ensure accurate volumetric calculations for ore, waste, and backfill operations.
• Implement and manage advanced underground surveying instruments and techniques (total stations, laser scanners, UMS).
• Liaise with mine planning, geology, and engineering to provide survey data for design and operations.
• Ensure survey data is processed, validated, and archived per standards and regulations (Chamber of Mines).
• Manage the surveying team: recruitment, training, performance evaluation, safety adherence.
• Conduct regular inspections of survey work and equipment for accuracy and reliability.
• Prepare survey reports, plans, and sections for internal and regulatory use.
