Job summary

Pick n Pay in Upington is seeking a friendly Checkout Assistant to deliver fast, accurate service at the checkout area. You will pack groceries, assist customers, and support cashiers to keep queues moving while maintaining hygiene and safety standards.

The role involves greeting customers, handling packing and bagging efficiently, following store procedures, and working with the frontline team to ensure a positive shopping experience during peak hours.

Qualifications

• Education: Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 or equivalent literacy and numeracy.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and perform packing and customer service duties.
• Willingness to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays.
• Proficiency in following operational procedures, including cash handling and product handling standards.
• Basic understanding of checkout/frontline operations and hygiene standards.
• Previous retail cash handling experience is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Greet customers politely and offer assistance with packing and carrying goods.
• Provide professional, friendly service that enhances the customer's shopping experience.
• Handle customer queries courteously and direct them to the appropriate staff member when necessary.
• Pack groceries efficiently and securely, separating fragile, cold, and cleaning products appropriately.
• Assist with bagging products while minimizing plastic waste and support cashiers during peak hours.
• Remain alert during transactions to prevent loss and follow cash handling procedures.
• Direct customers to open tills when queues are long and maintain smooth checkout flow.
• Keep checkout counters clean and comply with PPE and safety standards.
• Work cooperatively with cashiers, supervisors, and frontline team members and participate in briefings.
