Placements24 in Soweto, Gauteng, seeks a Biopharmaceutical Process Development Scientist to lead upstream and downstream development of biologics. You will design DoE experiments, develop analytical methods, ensure cGMP compliance, and drive technology transfer to manufacturing teams.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or Master's in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or related field.
• Minimum 4 years of hands-on biopharmaceutical process development experience (upstream and downstream).
• Experience with cell culture/fermentation and/or protein purification techniques.
• Proficiency in process characterization, scale-up, and technology transfer.
• Experience with PAT and DoE is highly desirable.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with data interpretation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; technical report writing.
• Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
• Knowledge of regulatory requirements (FDA/EMA) is a plus.
• Commitment to scientific excellence in the Soweto region.

Responsibilities

• Lead and execute upstream (cell culture) and downstream (purification) process development.
• Optimize biomanufacturing processes to improve yield and purity while reducing costs.
• Develop and validate analytical methods for in-process controls and product characterization.
• Design and run DoE-based experiments for process understanding and optimization.
• Troubleshoot technical challenges during development and scale-up.
• Prepare process development reports, tech transfer documents, and regulatory filings.
• Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure successful tech transfer.
• Stay updated on bioprocessing advancements and ensure cGMP compliance.
• Contribute to a strong scientific culture within the group.
