Job summary

Mayfly Agri in Hermanus, Western Cape, seeks an Assistant Packhouse Manager to oversee day-to-day operations, packaging planning, and QA. You will lead Packhouse and Dispatch Supervisors, ensure packhouse efficiency, and uphold food safety standards.

The ideal candidate holds a tertiary qualification in Agriculture, 3–5 years’ experience in packhouse management, HACCP and GlobalG.A.P. knowledge, strong Excel skills, and a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Agriculture or related field required.
  • 3–5 years' experience in Assistant Packhouse Management.
  • Prior supervision/management experience in packhouse or fresh produce.
  • Proven experience in production and quality management.
  • Strong knowledge of HACCP and GlobalG.A.P. systems.
  • Excellent Excel skills and IT proficiency.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills; good communication.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with day-to-day management and operations of the Packhouse.
  • Plan and coordinate packing activities to meet customer demand.
  • Maintain high product quality and food safety standards (HACCP & GlobalG.A.P.).
  • Lead and develop Packhouse and Dispatch Supervisors and teams.
  • Manage packaging materials and ensure uninterrupted operations.
  • Drive productivity, efficiency and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure Health and Safety standards and company policies.
  • Collaborate with Production, Logistics and Commercial teams to ensure efficiency and service.
  • Oversee staff scheduling, training, performance management and labour allocation.
  • Monitor KPIs: throughput, yield, quality, waste and efficiency.
  • Maintain records, documentation and traceability for audits.
  • Prepare for audits and certifications.
  • Ensure cold-chain integrity and proper storage handling.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce waste and downtime.
  • Address quality issues and customer feedback with corrective actions.

Job description

Minimum requirements for the role:
  • Must have a tertiary qualification in Agriculture or a related field
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience in Assistant Packhouse Management
  • Previous experience in a Packhouse supervisory or management role, preferably within the fresh produce industry
  • Proven experience in both production and quality management
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience of quality management systems, HACCP and Global G.A.P.
  • Ability to perform effectively under pressure while managing multiple priorities
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly Microsoft Excel
  • Strong leadership, coaching and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across teams
  • Must have a valid driver's license and own reliable vehicle
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Assisting with the day-to-day management and operations of the Packhouse.
  • Planning and coordinating packing activities to meet customer requirements and demand.
  • Maintaining the highest standards of product quality and food safety, including HACCP and Global G.A.P. requirements.
  • Leading, managing and developing Packhouse and Dispatch Supervisors and their respective teams.
  • Managing packaging materials and ensuring uninterrupted Packhouse operations.
  • Driving productivity, efficiency and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensuring compliance with Health and Safety standards, company policies and procedures.
  • Working closely with Production, Logistics and Commercial teams to ensure operational efficiency and exceptional customer service.
  • Overseeing staff scheduling, training, performance management and labour allocation.
  • Monitoring, analysing and reporting on key performance indicators (throughput, yield, quality, waste and efficiency).
  • Maintaining accurate records, documentation and traceability systems for audits and compliance.
  • Preparing for and supporting internal and external quality, food-safety and certification audits.
  • Ensuring effective cold-chain integrity, proper product handling and storage conditions.
  • Identifying opportunities to reduce waste, minimise downtime and optimise packing processes.
  • Addressing quality-related issues and customer feedback promptly while implementing corrective actions.
