Job summary

Bridge Personnel Concepts is seeking a Packhouse Manager in Gauteng, South Africa, responsible for overseeing all daily operations and technical aspects related to the packhouse. The successful candidate will ensure efficient and high-quality processing, packaging, and distribution of fresh produce, while also managing staff performance and coordinating logistics.

The ideal candidate should have a tertiary qualification in production or agriculture, along with 5 to 10 years of experience in production management, preferably in agriculture or food production. Strong managerial, communication, and customer service skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Oversee daily operations of the packhouse.
  • Ensure high-quality processing and distribution of fresh produce.

Job description

Purpose of the Position

The Packhouse Manager reports directly to the general manager and is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and technical aspects related to the packhouse.

Key Responsibilities
  • Execute strategies to enhance daily operations and technical aspects on the packhouse.
  • Ensure efficient, safe and high-quality processing, packaging and distribution of fresh produce.
  • Identify areas for improvement and implement changes to increase efficiency, productivity and quality.
  • Ensure that all machinery, fridges, electrical and other equipment remain in good working order, by issuing job cards and following up with the maintenance department.
  • Ensure the logistics are properly coordinated for timely and efficient delivery of produce to customers.
Administration and interdepartmental coordination / communication
  • Analyse the production programme in concert with the commercial manager and provide reports to management.
  • Analyse and improve weekly targets in concert with other relevant departments.
  • Ensure compliance with various quality programmes and upkeep of standards including FSSC.
  • Work closely with the sales and land departments to align production targets with sales target and programmes.
  • Ensure Non‑Conformance Reports are completed.
Customer Relationship Management and quality management
  • Communicate with relevant stakeholders and client in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers, retailers, distributors, and bulk buyers, where applicable.
  • Handle customer complaints, returns, and service concerns professionally and efficiently in concert with the sales / commercial department.
  • Ensure successful customer onboarding and compliance with buyer requirements (quality, packaging, safety standards) as these relate to production.
  • Coordinate with relevant departments to ensure orders are packed according to customer specifications.
  • Ensure all deliveries meet quality, weight, packaging, and freshness standards.
  • Ensure orders are loaded correctly and dispatched to prevent delivery errors or product damage.
  • Liaise with customer technical teams.
General oversight and labour relations
  • Manage the production team’s performance and targets.
  • Coach, direct and train employees on best practices for production issues and handling daily tasks.
  • Manage daily production operations, including orders, dispatch planning, and delivery follow‑ups.
  • Manage discipline and performance of subordinates in close concert with the HR department.
  • Ensure affective and productive labour relations amongst subordinates.
JOB SPECIFICATION
Qualifications and Experience
Education
  • Tertiary qualification in production, agriculture, or related field.
  • Certifications in FSSC (Food Safety System Certification) highly advantageous.
Experience
  • 5 to 10 years’ experience in production management, preferably in:
  • Agriculture
  • Food production
  • FMCG
Key Skills and Competencies
  • Strong managerial and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of agricultural products, crop cycles, and packhouse operations.
  • Excellent customer service and relationship management.
  • Ability to handle pressure, fast‑paced environments, and large order volumes.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (especially Excel, Word).
