Requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric
- Qualified Diesel Mechanic
- Previous supervisory or management experience within a workshop environment
- Experience working with trailers and/or heavy vehicles
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Good organisational and problem-solving abilities
- A hands-on approach with the ability to lead and support a workshop team
Responsibilities
Workshop Operations
- Support the Workshop Manager with the day-to-day running of the workshop.
- Allocate and coordinate daily work for mechanics, technicians and workshop assistants.
- Oversee vehicle servicing, repairs and preventative maintenance.
- Monitor job progress and ensure work is completed within agreed timeframes.
- Prioritise urgent repairs and breakdowns based on operational requirements.
- Inspect completed work before vehicles are released from the workshop.
- Help manage workflow to minimise vehicle downtime.
- Conduct regular inspections of workshop activities and completed repairs.
Fleet Maintenance
- Ensure vehicle services and inspections are completed according to company and manufacturer requirements.
- Review vehicle defects reported by drivers and ensure corrective action is taken.
- Identify recurring mechanical issues and recommend appropriate solutions.
- Maintain accurate vehicle maintenance records and histories.
- Monitor fleet availability and elevate vehicles that remain off-road for extended periods.
Team Supervision
- Supervise, support and guide mechanics, technicians and workshop assistants.
- Allocate duties based on skills, workload and operational priorities.
- Monitor team performance, attendance and productivity.
- Ensure employees follow company procedures and safe working practices.
- Encourage teamwork, accountability and professional conduct.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all workshop activities comply with company health and safety requirements.
- Promote and monitor safe working practices throughout the workshop.
- Report and assist with the investigation of incidents, accidents and unsafe conditions.
- Ensure vehicles meet applicable roadworthiness and safety requirements.
- Ensure all workshop staff wear the required PPE.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe workshop environment.
- Ensure tools and equipment are stored correctly.
Administration & Reporting
- Maintain accurate workshop records, job cards and maintenance documentation.
- Track vehicle downtime and maintenance turnaround times.
- Keep accurate records of servicing, repairs, inspections and breakdowns.
- Provide management with regular updates on workshop performance and fleet availability.
