Job summary

Nelson Mandela University in George seeks an assistant in the building services workshops to support maintenance and preventative work across NMU buildings in line with Health and Safety Act and NMU policies.

The role involves assisting an Artisan with repairs, using electrical power tools, applying coatings and edging to carpentry, and working at heights, with the ability to work without supervision and as part of a team.

Qualifications

• Grade 8-12 required.
• 1 year of relevant technical experience preferred.
• Preference for applicants with an unendorsed Category B driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Assist an Artisan in repairing and maintaining buildings on building services related work orders.
• Independently use electrical power tools (belt sanders, drills, etc.).
• Apply protective coatings to objects (e.g., varnish).
• Apply edging to chipboard parts of cupboards.

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The purpose of this post is to lend assistance in the building services workshops regarding maintenance and preventative maintenance work and services to all NMU buildings in accordance with the Health and Safety Act and NMU policies and procedures.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

• Assist an Artisan in repairing and maintaining buildings on all building services related work orders.
• Be able to independently use electrical power tools, eg belt sanders, drills, etc.
• To apply protective coatings to objects (eg. varnish)
• To apply edging to chipboard parts of cupboards.

CORE COMPETENCIES

• Have knowledge of Large Buildings and Services infrastructure.
• Have knowledge about minor building maintenance and new installation work.
• Must be able to work at heights, eg: ladders, scaffolding, roofs etc.
• Have working knowledge of the building regulations in the Occupation Health and Safety Act and Construction Safety legislation.
• Possess the ability to work without supervision and function well as part of a team.

REQUIREMENTS

• Grade 8-12.
• 1 year’s relevant technical experience.
• Preference will be given to applicants that have and Unendorsed Category B driver’s license.
