Job summary

The City of Charleston is seeking a Demolition Inspector to enforce and ensure compliance with the City zoning ordinance and state building codes for existing structures and properties. You will work under supervision, developing methods and processes to support safe, compliant neighborhoods.

Responsibilities include scheduling inspections, investigating complaints, issuing citations, testifying in court, and coordinating with owners and lien holders.

Qualifications

• Requires High School graduation or GED.
• Requires some experience in demolition inspection or closely related work.
• Must obtain ICC Property Maintenance Certification within one year of hire.
• Must possess State WV Property Maintenance Inspector License.
• Valid Driver's License.

Responsibilities

• Schedules and conducts scheduled residential demolition inspections as required.
• Receives and investigates complaints for code violations in a timely manner.
• Issues warning letters, fines, or citations when violations are found.
• Testifies in municipal court with documentation to support cases.
• Communicates with owners, lien holders, and utility companies as needed.
• Performs site checks and documents information for historic preservation clearance.
