Job summary

The Missouri River Regional Library is seeking a part-time Youth Services Assistant responsible for circulation, basic reference, and clerical tasks in the Youth Services Department. You will check in/out materials, assist patrons, shelve items, and help with program support and daily operations.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma or GED, basic computer skills, and a customer-service orientation. Prior public-service experience is helpful.

  • Assists with opening and closing the library.
  • Attends and participates in department, committee, and library staff meetings.
  • May work in other service desk areas.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Summary/Objective

Provides circulation and reference services to library patrons in the Youth Services Department and performs clerical and other routine tasks as assigned.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a part-time position. Hours of work are Monday 5-8pm, Wednesday 5-8pm, Friday 4-6pm; every other weekend Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Sunday 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provides circulation services by checking in and out materials and retrieving materials for patrons.
  2. Assists with maintenance of the Youth Services Department, including straightening, shelving materials, and shelf reading in assigned areas.
  3. Provides basic reference services by assisting patrons in locating items.
  4. Answers library telephone and assists patrons by taking messages, renewing library materials, or transferring calls to appropriate departments or individuals.
  5. Assists with opening and closing the library.
  6. Attends and participates in department, committee, and library staff meetings and programs.
  7. May work in other service desk areas.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, printers, phones, photocopiers, cash registers, credit card machines, etc.

  • Frequent bending, lifting, reaching and stooping to select and shelve library materials.

  • Lifting and carrying, 25 pounds or less.
Education/Experience
  1. High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
  2. Previous computer experience required.
  3. Public service experience is helpful.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications

High degree of customer service skills to work with patrons of all ages, including special needs patrons and Library staff.
