Description

JOB TITLE: Youth Services Assistant

CLASS/GRADE: Clerical I

POSITION TYPE: Hourly

REPORTS TO: Youth Librarian

RESPONSIBILITY

Provide accurate and knowledgeable customer service by connecting children and families with library services and materials.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provide hands-on customer service, answers customer questions, helps customers find library materials, assist customers with use of public computers, personal devices, and office equipment.
  • Develop familiarity with all collections and provide reader advisory services with audience appropriate content.
  • Create and maintain accurate customer accounts, sets up new customer accounts, makes changes to customer information, and reconciles customer accounts.
  • Use the library's website to locate information, resources, and services, and assist customers in navigating digital content, account features, and online tools.
  • Handle materials, empty book returns; process requested items; inspect, shelve and shift materials; maintain orderly shelves; maintain orderly library spaces.
  • Assists with library events including setup, cleanup, and crowd control, directional assistance, and tracking attendance numbers.
  • Operate a point-of-sale system and cash handling, counts, collects, and records cash and credit transactions; completes paperwork as required.
  • Performs light cleaning and janitorial tasks. Monitors and reports more complex issues with cleaning, mechanical systems, and building issues.
  • Promote library classes, events, and services to customers.
  • May be assigned to a specific area or may be a floater.
  • Apply Library policies consistently with all customers, staff, and vendors.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1-year customer service experience.
  • Cash handling experience using a cash drawer, register, and credit card machine.
  • Experience and proficiency with computers, the internet, Microsoft Office, email, library specific software and standard office equipment including phones. Ability to learn new technologies.
