Scioto County Public Library is seeking a Youth Services Assistant to provide reference and readers’ advisory, along with circulation support for the community. You will plan and present youth programming for children 0 to 12 years old, both in-house and in the community, including school group tours and displays.

The Youth Services Assistant, under the direction of the Youth Services Coordinator, is responsible for providing reference and readers’ advisory assistance and circulation services to members of the community. The position is responsible for planning, preparing and presenting youth services programming designed for children 0 to 12 years-of-age both in house and throughout the community; plans and assembles displays; provides tours and programs for area school groups and youth organizations; and performs miscellaneous duties such as shelving material, cleaning and organizing storage areas.
High School diploma or equivalent
6-months – 1-year experience; customer service experience preferred
The ability to meet scheduled hours with rare absences; includes evenings and weekends
Driver’s License, car insurance, and access to reliable transportation / vehicle
Commitment to excellence in customer service and representing the library in a positive manner
Exceptional communication skills; both verbally and in writing
The ability to effectively use Microsoft Office Suite and use new software and technology
Assist patrons in-person and via telephone with public service duties including: reference services, readers’ advisory services, circulation services, online catalog instruction, assisting customers with the use of library equipment and other related duties that arise
Plans, prepares, and presents programming in-house, in the community, and virtually
Participate in collection development and maintenance
Process reserves and consortium items
Plan and prepare attractive department displays and maintain order in supply areas
Shelve materials and shelf read as required
Interpret and explain the library’s policies and procedures to the public in a customer-friendly manner
Assist other Departments as needed

Requires a combination of sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, and some driving
Requires regularly lifting items weighing up to fifty pounds; sometimes loading and unloading materials
Abilities of reaching, bending, climbing, and twisting
The ability to push full book carts for considerable distances
Some outdoor activity; majority of time in climate-controlled environment. Regularly required to talk and/or hear within normal ranges
The ability to respond to alarms and communicate safety information to patrons and staff
Visual acuity for sustained use of computer monitor
