Job summary

South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice seeks a Captain to lead security staff in a juvenile facility. The role directs Lieutenants, Sergeants, and JCOs to ensure a safe, secure environment and compliance with agency policy and state law.

You will coordinate shift coverage, respond to emergencies, supervise inspections, and maintain secure operations while promoting rehabilitation and positive youth development.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and supervisory experience required.
• Bachelor's degree in human services or criminal justice may substitute for supervisory experience.
• Substantial knowledge of state law secured facility rules and DJJ operations.

Responsibilities

• Oversee security staff and coordinate daily operations to ensure safety and orderly facility function.
• Direct and train Lieutenants, Sergeants, and JCOs; enforce policy and procedures.
• Respond to emergencies and conduct routine inspections for safety and compliance.
• Manage access control, keys, radios, restraints and security equipment.
• Schedule staff to maintain appropriate youth-to-staff ratios and coverage.
• Collaborate with leadership on training and performance development.
