Job summary

Columbus Metropolitan Library is seeking a Youth Engagement Specialist to enrich youth experiences at the Barnett Branch in Columbus, OH. The role centers on engaging youth and their caregivers, promoting literacy, and delivering diverse programs aligned with the library’s Young Minds Strategy.

You will collaborate with schools and community partners, plan and present events, and ensure welcoming spaces for youth in a dynamic public library setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree required.
• 2–3 years’ experience working with youth or community engagement.
• Experience delivering programs and services to diverse audiences preferred.
• Interest and ability to serve and develop rapport with youth and their caregivers.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to operate library technology including PC, email, software (Windows/Microsoft Office) and other job-related equipment.

Responsibilities

• Proactively provide a high level of customer service by engaging youth and families in usage of library resources, activities and programs.
• Create a safe, welcoming environment balancing a fun atmosphere with relationship building and learning.
• Plan, promote and present programs and informal engagements for children of all ages at the location and off-site.
• Answer customer questions and provide service throughout the building; refer to sources using diverse tools.
• Connect with schools and organizations to promote Young Minds programs via presentations and events.
• Diffuse youth confrontations and mediate to reduce tensions.
• Perform collection management for juvenile materials and create displays.
