Job summary

YMCA of South Hampton Roads seeks a Counselor II to provide a safe, inclusive, and enriching experience for children aged 5–12. You will mentor, role model, and guide activities across recreation, education, and character-building programs, helping kids grow confidence and friendships.

You will supervise for safety, lead diverse activities, manage groups, support positive behavior, foster inclusion, and communicate with families.

Qualifications

• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Have a high school diploma or the equivalent.
• CPR/First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.
• Completes all pre-employment requirements including background checks.
• Adequate speaking, hearing and writing skills appropriate for interacting with children.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and ensure safety of children at all times.
• Lead and assist in a diverse range of activities including sports, arts and crafts, nature exploration, team-building exercises, and STEM.
• Foster positive relationships and manage group dynamics among peers.
• Model appropriate behavior and reinforce positive behaviors through praise and encouragement.
• Create an inclusive and welcoming environment where all children feel valued and respected.
• Communicate effectively with children, parents/guardians, staff, and leadership.
• Participate in training sessions, staff meetings, and professional development opportunities.
