The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Division of State-Operated Specialty Care, Bureau of State Training School (STS), is seeking a Youth Counselor to join our team. This is a full-time position, working 40 hours per week with a Monday to Friday schedule, 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. (flexible hours), including weekends as needed. The Youth Counselor provides counseling and related therapy as part of the treatment program for young men. Primary duties include:

STS offers a holistic social, behavioral, psychiatric, academic, and vocational program using evidence-based practices. It provides a secure, treatment-focused setting for males aged 12 to 18 who have been adjudicated delinquent. The program develops individualized treatment plans and offers comprehensive education to help young men transition back into the community. Located in Eldora, a community with approximately 2,800 residents, in north central Iowa. Eldora offers outdoor activities, cultural events, and is within driving distance to Ames, Cedar Falls, Marshalltown, Iowa Falls, and Des Moines.
Applicants should have a graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with at least twelve semester hours in child development, criminology, mental health, psychology, social work, sociology, or a related area. Alternatively, one year of full-time employment working with youths or adults in relevant fields, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, qualifies. Current employees with experience as a Youth Services Technician may also qualify.
Designated positions require obtaining a Chauffeur's License and endorsements within a timeframe set by the employer.
