Job summary

FedEx is seeking a part-time Switcher to move trailers in the Portland yard and assist with package handling. You will hook and move trailers between yard and doors, coordinate with control, and document movements.

If needed, you will load/unload packages, inspect equipment, and help sort packages using scanners and labels. The role requires a valid driver’s license and ability to follow safety protocols, with good communication skills in a fast-paced team environment.

Qualifications

• Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a DOT file.
• Ability to understand and follow instruction regarding work duties and safety methods.
• Ability to discern numbers and information in order to sort packages correctly.
• Ability to use basic tools and equipment such as skate wheel rollers, dock carts, hand-held scanners, chutes and unloading devices.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment.

Responsibilities

• Performs trailer switches defined as hooking and moving a parked trailer from the yard to a load/unload door or from a door to the yard.
• Communicates with management to coordinate trailer movements in the yard.
• Documents trailer moves using the Yard Management System or switcher cards.
• Performs pre- and post-trip inspections on switcher equipment.
• Loads and unloads packages by hand as needed and sorts packages accordingly.
• Determines appropriate conveyor system by scanning packages and sorting them by labels and numbers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
