Job summary

Cargomatic is seeking a highly organized Yard Manager to oversee daily yard operations, driver dispatch, freight tracking, and customer communication. This dual-role hub ensures yard equipment is safe and organized, loads are dispatched efficiently, and freight is tracked accurately from origin to destination.

Ideal candidates will have strong logistics knowledge, especially in drayage/container operations, and a commitment to safety and compliance.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in transportation, logistics, dispatch, freight, and yard operations.
• CDL and current DOT Physical card required.
• Proficient with data entry and learning new TMS, GPS, and tracking tools.
• Ability to manage multiple drivers and loads in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong communication, organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
• Flexible hours or shifts as needed.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily yard activity to maintain an organized, safe, clean, efficient yard.
• Coordinate staging, parking, movement of containers, chassis, trailers, and equipment.
• Maintain real-time records of all equipment and assets in the yard.
• Identify shortages or excess and coordinate inventory with drivers, terminals, warehouses, dispatch, and customers.
• Ensure thorough equipment inspections and log/report damaged or unsafe units.
• Resolve yard congestion and operational bottlenecks.
• Dispatch drivers and assign freight loads based on equipment, location, HOS, and customer needs.
• Provide clear pickup/delivery instructions to drivers.
• Monitor drivers, coordinate breaks/adjustments, and adapt assignments.
• Maximize driver productivity while minimizing empty miles and downtime.
• Resolve delayed loads, missed appointments, rejected shipments, and equipment failures.
• Track active loads, drivers, chassis, and containers in real-time.
• Log milestones in the Transportation Management System (TMS).
• Follow up on missing tracking updates and maintain records.
• Act as liaison between drivers, dispatch, yard crews, terminals, ports, warehouses, and customers.
• Escalate severe issues with actionable details.
