Job summary

Stephens Family YMCA in Champaign, IL seeks a Y on the Fly Leader for a seasonal program Aug 2026 through May 2027. The role delivers programming to communities outside the Y's current branches, bringing games and activities to children and youth.

The Leader maintains a positive atmosphere, sets up and cleans up equipment, supervises activities, enforces safety rules, and models the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Qualifications

• CPR/AED certification required within 60 days of employment.
• Ability to work with youth and families at various sites.

Responsibilities

• Staying active and engaged with participants during program time.
• Assist with proper set up, clean-up and maintenance of equipment.
• Supervise participants to ensure rules and safety procedures are followed.
• Ensure YMCA program standards and safety procedures are met.
• Respond to parent inquiries in a timely manner.
• Complete daily equipment checklist and report maintenance/safety issues.
• Lead and follow the weekly activity schedule.
• Assist participants with homework, crafts, and snacks.

SUMMARY

Y on the Fly seeks to deliver a programming experience directly to communities outside of the Y's current branch and will allow the Y to serve more neighborhoods and more youth than ever before. Y on the Fly takes games and activities into the community for children and youth to enjoy.

The Y on the Fly Leader is responsible for maintaining a supportive and positive atmosphere. Leader is responsible for the proper set up/clean-up of the Y on the Fly equipment. This person is also responsible for safely monitoring all Y on the Fly activities and enforcing all rules and policies at all times. The Y on the Fly Leader will exemplify the Stephens Family YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. The Leader will interact appropriately with participants and families and be a good role model at all times.

KNOW - HOW

The Y on the Fly Leader must be CPR/AED certified within 60 days of employment. Incumbents must be able to work with all ages of youth and their families at the site locations. The Y on the Fly Leader must be able to respond to any situation in a professional and respectful manner.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

1. This is a very active job and that requires consistent walking and engagement with children.
2. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit and stoop, kneel or crouch.
3. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Staying active and engaged with participants during program time.
2. Responsible for assisting with proper set up, clean-up and maintenance of the equipment including opening and closing procedures
3. Responsible for properly supervising participants during programming hours to ensure all rules and policies are followed.
4. Ensure YMCA program standards are met and all safety procedures are followed.
5. Respond to all parent inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
6. Complete daily checklist of all Y on the Fly equipment being used that day, which includes both before and after the program. Leader is responsible for directly notifying Supervisor immediately of any/all maintenance/safety issues.
7. Leading and following the activity schedule created for the week.
8. Assisting participants with homework help, crafts, passing out snack etc.

EFFECT ON END RESULT

Under the successful supervision of the Site Director, the Y on the Fly program will create a positive and inclusive environment for youth in our community. The program will engage and impact more lives than ever before and set up the long-term growth and success of the Y in all areas of our community.
