Job summary

Shine BrightX LLC is seeking a part-time tutor to support SCC students and staff in writing and reading, both face-to-face and online via Smarthinking platform. The role emphasizes theory-based tutoring and maintaining records, with flexible hours in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The candidate should have at least 60 college credits in English or a related field, strong communication skills, and familiarity with tutoring practices. Prior tutoring is a plus.

Qualifications

• Minimum 60 semester credits in English or related field.
• Recommendation from English teacher, graduate advisor, or tutoring experience.
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn tutoring theory.
• Strong technology skills and ability to conduct asynchronous online tutoring.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Punctual and reliable with missed shifts notification.
• Desirable: tutoring/mentoring experience with English Learners or community college students.

Responsibilities

Your Role

Here’s what you will be doing:

• Provide tutoring in writing and reading to SCC students and staff on various assignments, both face-to-face and online using SCC’s Smarthinking platform.
• Follow best practices based on current tutor and writing center theory.
• Promote a positive and welcoming learning and working environment by adhering to Writing Center and Tutoring and Learning Center protocols and policies.
• Maintain accurate records of student sessions and submit timely web time entries.
• Support the College’s organizational environment goals by enhancing communication, policies, and operational efficiency.
• Assist with keeping the Writing Center clean and orderly.
• Cooperate with the Director of Transitions and Tutoring and the Tutor Center Coordinator.
• Provide information to assist with building term schedules as needed.

About You

The company is looking for:

• Minimum junior-level college status (60 semester credits) in English or a related field.
• Recommendation from an English teacher, graduate advisor, or previous tutoring experience.
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn theory-based best practices in tutoring and writing center theory.
• Strong technology skills and willingness to conduct asynchronous online tutoring.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Good personal hygiene and punctuality with appropriate notification for missed shifts.
• Desired qualifications include tutoring or mentoring experience, experience with English Language Learners, and familiarity with community colleges and their students.
