Job summary

Barry University is seeking a writing tutor for the Peer Tutoring Lab in the Glenn Hubert Learning Center. The student tutor will conduct one-on-one and small group sessions in writing for undergraduate courses, in-person for at least 10 hours weekly, Monday through Friday.

The role requires identifying students’ writing needs, differentiating instruction, and fostering autonomy. A minimum 3.5 GPA and an A in ENG courses are required.

Qualifications

• Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Must be punctual, organized, professional, and courteous.
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.
• Must have earned grade of an “A” in ENG courses.
• Must provide a professional faculty recommendation letter from the Biology department.
• Must be enrolled full-time as a Barry University student.

Responsibilities

• Provides one-on-one and small-group tutorial services to a diverse population of undergraduate students.
• Identifies students’ writing skills needs and differentiates strategies and instructional materials to meet individual students’ needs.
• Assists student in understanding the material while fostering student autonomy.
• Engages students in tutoring sessions by utilizing active learning strategies.
• Motivates students by being an active listener.
• Documents student work and progress using the Peer Tutoring Lab systems and reports to the Lab Manager.
• Develops and facilitates workshop/short videos related to writing.
