Job summary

Gloucestershire County Council seeks a skilled Workshop Technician to service, inspect and repair HGVs, LGVs, and fleet equipment across the GCC/GFRS fleet. You will travel for mobile maintenance and contribute to training and development initiatives.

The role requires strong diagnostic ability, a City & Guilds/NVQ qualification, and experience in a busy workshop. Hybrid training and a clear career pathway are offered with a permanent contract.

Responsibilities

  • Servicing and repairing HGV, LGV and passenger cars, including statutory inspections.
  • Inspecting, servicing and repairing specialist fleet equipment.
  • Conducting diagnostic investigations across light and heavy fleet & equipment.
  • Mobile maintenance, traveling across the county to keep GCC and GFRS vehicles roadworthy.
  • Working on fire appliances, pumps, boats, and specialist rescue equipment.
  • Servicing portable power units, lighting rigs and hydraulic/pneumatic systems.
  • Providing training on equipment used across the GCC/GFRS fleet.
  • Supporting equipment readiness for front-line fire appliances.
  • Fabrication, engineering, vehicle conversions, and occasional roadside recovery.
  • Collection and delivery of vehicles as required.
  • Delivering technical training to the wider team.
  • Attending locations to support our on-call and out-of-hour cover.

Workshop Technician – Gloucestershire County Council

We are looking for a skilled Workshop Technician to support frontline public services in Gloucestershire County Council.

Salary: £33,143 – £36,363 per annum. Hours per week: 37.00. Contract: Permanent. Location: Gloucestershire.

Requirements
  • Strong diagnostic, service and repair experience.
  • Current recognised qualification within the motor industry (City & Guilds / NVQ).
  • Ability to prioritise and manage workloads effectively.
  • Flexibility and a methodical approach.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Experience working within a busy workshop.
  • Good physical fitness and mobility for vehicle access.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
Additional Qualification Expectations
  • LGV‑qualified candidates to train and qualify as an HGV technician, including obtaining a Class 2 HGV driving licence.
  • HGV technicians to train and qualify as an LGV technician.
  • All role‑related training is essential and will be provided.

  • 37‑hour working week, Monday–Friday (normal hours).
  • Paid standby/on‑call allowances of over £30 per 24 hours.

This position is subject to a standard DBS check. The council is not currently able to offer sponsorship in this role. Candidates will need to have right to work that enables them to commit to at least 6 months employment. Right to work is not transferable from a sponsored role held with another employer.
