The ideal candidate will drive cost containment via meticulous bill review, high-level negotiation, and WCAB defense while aligning with California regulations. Strong claims management experience is preferred.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years in California Workers' Compensation lien resolution (defense)
  • Strong knowledge of California Labor Code, CCR Title 8, and lien laws
  • Experience with bill review and lien negotiations

Responsibilities

  • Lien Defense & Strategy: manage high-volume EDD and medical liens
  • Negotiation: negotiate settlements reflecting fair value
  • WCAB Appearances: prepare for and attend Lien Conferences and Trials
  • Case Management: maintain logs, settle documents, file proofs of service
  • Reporting: provide updates to supervising attorneys and adjusters

We are seeking a detail-oriented and strategically-minded Lien Resolution Specialist Paralegal to join our team. In this role, you will represent the interests of insurance carriers, focusing primarily on the resolution and defense of EDD and medical provider liens.

You will act as the primary defense advocate during WCAB proceedings, ensuring that our clients are protected from excessive or non-compliant medical charges while maintaining strict adherence to California regulatory standards. Key Responsibilities
  • Lien Defense & Strategy: Manage a high-volume caseload of EDD, medical, and other liens, developing and executing defense strategies to minimize client exposure and financial liability.
  • Negotiation: Proactively contact lien claimants and their representatives to negotiate settlements that reflect the fair and legal value of services provided.
  • WCAB Appearances: Prepare for and attend Lien Conferences and Lien Trials at various Workers' Compensation Appeals Board district offices.
  • Case Management: Maintain detailed logs of negotiation efforts, prepare settlement documents, and file proofs of service.
  • Reporting: Provide regular updates to supervising attorneys and claims adjusters regarding lien status, potential exposure, and settlement recommendations.
  • Additional Paralegal Functions: Role may entail additional paralegal functions, including but not limited to exposure analysis, report rating, etc.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Certifications: SIP certification strongly preferred. CHLR, Paralegal degrees/certificates considered.
  • Claims Background: Ideal candidate will come from a claims adjuster background. Licensed claims adjusters will be considered first.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in California Workers' Compensation lien resolution, specifically from a defense perspective.
  • Legal Knowledge: Deep understanding of the California Labor Code, CCR Title 8 regulations, and recent case law affecting lien claimant rights and defense strategies.
  • Technical Proficiency: Mastery of the OMFS and experience using EAMS for document filing and case tracking.
  • Negotiation Skills: Proven track record of achieving favorable settlements through persuasive communication and data-backed arguments.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong ability to interpret complex medical billing and identify inconsistencies or lack of substantial medical evidence.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal advocacy skills for both informal negotiations and formal WCAB hearings.
