Responsibilities

  • Develop questions, conduct interviews, and write AP-style stories.

  • Edit pieces with Adobe software and post to Spotify/YouTube.
  • Check posts for completion and maintain Google Drive archive.
  • Take event photos and share with reporters.
  • Participate in specialty roles like Sport Analyst.
  • Perform special tasks as assigned.

Salary Information

$12.50 per hour.

Job Summary

The work study program provides funds for part-time employment to help students finance the costs of postsecondary education. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student’s course of study. The program is designed to provide students with an opportunity for employment arranged around class schedules, while providing essential services to the College and the community.

Essential Functions

Students will work in one or more of the following roles (as desired) with the Banner News editor and staff on communication with Boone campus community depending on individual skill/talent.

  • Writers/podcasters/videographers will develop questions using research, conduct interviews, and write journalism style stories/previews using AP Style. All stories will be green lighted by the student editor and proofed by the editor and staff. Writers and podcasters will post their contribution to the website Banner News and share links with the social media manager.
  • Social media managers will post new stories and other activities plus track analytics to give feedback to the editor. The manager will also manage recruiting tables and create opportunities to raise awareness of Banner News. The manager may (or may not) be the creator of the weekly flier Banner Billboard located in the bathrooms and other locations.
  • Podcasters and videographers will electronically edit their pieces using Adobe Software Suite and post final versions to Spotify or YouTube.
  • Website managers will check new posts for completion, deal with maintaining the website like plug-ins, etc. This position will also organize/maintain the Google Drive archive
  • Photographers will take pictures at events and interviewees and share with the reporters for posting on the website.
  • Specialty positions are also available like Sport Analyst depending on interest.
  • Special tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Ability to be a good team member who can work independently and receive feedback regarding suggestions for improvement.
Basic knowledge of computer operations.
Willingness to engage with students, faculty, staff and guests.
Uphold the policies of Banner News and follow the established processes that it functions within including professional ethics.

Desired Qualifications

Strong research, writing, and verbal skills.
Social media posting experience.
Experience interviewing, podcasting, creating videos.
Experience with computer analytics, editing audio and video files.
Photography skills.

Work Schedule

15 hours per week, Monday – Thursday.
