You’re charming, personable, and persuasive – but most of all, you know how to make the wine drinking experience a delight for guests, by selecting the appropriate glasses and pouring properly for our guest to taste. Wine selection, wine pouring, and wine selling are the cornerstones of our Wine Steward role. As a Wine Steward at Giant Eagle, you’ll create points of difference from our competition by enhancing the customer shopping experience, offering recommendations for wine, food, and entertainment. Our well-trained, knowledgeable Wine Stewards help develop and showcase our expertise to position our stores as “THE” stores to shop for wine and beer.

Job Description
- Experience Required: 1 to 3 years
- Experience Desired: Strong customer service experience; Wine knowledge and/or industry experience; Experience in retail food, catering, or restaurant environment
- Education Desired: High school diploma or equivalent
- Certification or Licensing Preferred: Certificate from a sommelier organization, such as The Court of Master Sommeliers
- Lifting Requirement: Up to 50 pounds
- Age Requirement: At least 21 years of age
Job Responsibilities
- Demonstrate strong knowledge, interest, and passion for products and services related to the role.
- Participate in ongoing product and customer service training programs; attend distributor trade shows as necessary.
- Understand and adhere to all relevant laws and company policies; report any violations.
- Participate in in-store and regional team meetings.
- Conduct daily team huddles as directed by the Team Leader.
- Ensure compliance with State Liquor Laws and company policies regarding alcohol; identify and prevent sales to underage or intoxicated individuals.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of equipment, tables, utensils, and floors.
- Maintain knowledge of code dating.
- Visit competitors regularly, at least once a month.
- Prioritize safety in all work aspects for team members, guests, and products.
- Assist customers with wine, beer, and liquor purchases by providing knowledgeable recommendations.
- Lead by example to deliver exceptional guest service.
- Contribute to building the store’s beer and wine assortment, communicating with distributors and merchandising staff.
- Plan and execute seasonal and promotional operations with the Store Leader.
- Oversee and maintain the wine list, making suggestions to fit chef’s dishes if necessary.
- Implement marketing techniques to drive sales.
- Develop and execute merchandising and marketing programs to increase sales and profit margins.
- Engage with guests, making knowledgeable recommendations suited to their tastes.
- Ensure approachability and knowledgeability without being intimidating.
- Follow procedures to meet inventory, out-of-stock, and shrink goals.
- Perform all Team Leader functions when necessary and appropriate.
- Train and develop team members, overseeing their work and performance.
- Organize customer tasting events and sampling programs.
- Manage department orders, stocking, and receiving using the latest tools and systems.
- Track and reduce out-of-stocks and participate in inventories.
- Utilize tools to help reduce shrink.
- Ensure proper ordering, receiving, stocking, and signage within the department.
