Job summary

The Nature Conservancy in Lexington, KY seeks a Prescribed Fire and Stewardship Technician to advance our prescribed fire and land stewardship programs. The role requires leading fire crews, planning burn logistics, and coordinating with partners across multiple sites in Kentucky, including remote work possibilities for nearby areas.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or related field.
• NWCG Squad Boss (FFT1) and Wildland Faller qualifications or equivalent training.
• Experience with wildland fire management in the Appalachians or similar ecosystems including prescribed burns and burn plan development.
• Foundational knowledge of prescribed fire, fuels management, restoration, and ecology of eastern forests.
• Experience operating fire and stewardship equipment and loading/ towing trailers.
• Proficiency in ArcGIS, Avenza Maps, GPS, and Microsoft products.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain arduous fitness.

Responsibilities

• Assist with prescribed burns: maintain firebreaks, lead crews of 3–7 firefighters, plan logistics.
• Develop prescribed burn and land management plans.
• Maintain fire & stewardship supplies and records.
• Monitor fire effects and report data.
• Coordinate with partners and stakeholders across a wide area.
• Manage budgets, negotiate with vendors, and assist with budget development.
• Oversee preserves and hiking trails maintenance.
• Ensure compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
