Job summary

The Nature Conservancy in Lexington, KY is seeking a Prescribed Fire and Stewardship Technician to advance our fire and land stewardship programs. The role requires leading squads, planning burns, and managing equipment across a multi-county Kentucky region.

You will develop burn plans, monitor fire effects, and work with state and federal partners. A Bachelor’s degree plus 3 years of relevant experience, NWCG FFT1, and licenses are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• NWCG Squad Boss (FFT1), and Wildland Faller qualified, or equivalent, documented training and experience at or above the FFT1 and Wildland Faller qualifications.
• Experience with wildland fire management in the Appalachians or similar ecosystems including but not limited to implementing prescribed burns, supervising squads and working with engines and UTVs.
• Foundational knowledge and experience of prescribed fire, fuels management, restoration, and ecology of eastern forests.
• Experience maintaining and operating fire and stewardship equipment including pumps, power equipment, off‑road vehicles, skid‑steers, tractors, and trailers.
• Must be able to maintain arduous fitness and a valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Assists with the implementation of prescribed burns by maintaining firebreaks and leading squads of 3–7 firefighters.
• Assists with development of prescribed burn plans and land management plans.
• Maintains fire and stewardship supplies and equipment and records.
• Leads vegetation and fire effects monitoring programs and reports data.
• Manages preserves, preserves infrastructure, and hiking trails.
• Networks with landowners, partners, donors, and the public to recruit support.
