Job summary

The Prescribed Fire and Stewardship Technician at The Nature Conservancy is based in Lexington, KY, with remote work possible for those near Lexington, Morehead, or London. The role leads prescribed fire and stewardship programs, coordinating with partners, volunteers, and staff to maintain preserves and implement plans.

Frequent travel is required. Requires a Bachelor’s degree with 3 years’ natural resource experience, FFT1/Wildland Faller qualifications, and proficiency in ArcGIS, Avenza Maps,

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or equivalent.
• NWCS Squad Boss (FFT1) and Wildland Faller qualified, or equivalent.
• Experience with wildland fire management in Appalachians or similar ecosystems.
• Foundational knowledge of prescribed fire, fuels management, restoration, and ecology.
• Experience maintaining and operating fire and stewardship equipment.
• Experience using ArcGIS, Avenza Maps, GPS, and Microsoft Office.
• Must maintain arduous fitness level and have a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Assist with implementing prescribed burns by maintaining firebreaks and planning logistics.
• Lead squads of 3–7 firefighters and supervise burn-related activities.
• Develop burn plans, fire management plans, and land management plans.
• Maintain supplies, equipment, and maintenance records; track budget.
• Coordinate with partners and communities; ensure program compliance.
• Support recruitment and supervision of seasonal staff and volunteers.
• Ensure safety, training, and credentialing standards are met.
