Job summary

The Nature Conservancy seeks a Prescribed Fire and Stewardship Technician to advance Kentucky’s fire and land stewardship programs. Based in Lexington, KY, with possible remote work near Lexington, Morehead, or London, KY, the role requires travel and leadership of burn squads.

The candidate will plan and implement prescribed burns, oversee burn plans, manage equipment, and supervise staff and volunteers across a broad region while maintaining safety and compliance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in natural resources management or similar field and 3 years’ experience.
• NWCG Squad Boss FFT1 and Wildland Faller qualifications or equivalent training/experience.
• Experience with wildland fire management, prescribed burns, burn plan development, supervising squads, engines/UTVs, and collaboration with partners.

Responsibilities

• Assist with prescribed burns by maintaining firebreaks and leading squads of 3–7 firefighters.
• Develop prescribed burn plans, fire management plans, and land management plans.
• Maintain fire and stewardship supplies and equipment; keep maintenance records.
• Lead vegetation and fire effects monitoring and report data.
• Coordinate with partners, funders, and volunteers; manage budgets and contracts.
