Job summary

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation seeks a Wigmaker apprentice to rediscover and preserve 18th-century trade skills. You will learn hand skills, research, and interpretation while working with the Historic Trades team.

Responsibilities include mastering leather and wig-making techniques, maintaining wigs for daily use, and presenting history to guests. The role requires a high school diploma or higher and a Virginia driver's license, with weekend work possible.

Qualifications

• High school degree or equivalent with knowledge of 18th-century colonial history.
• Four-year degree in American history or completion/certification from a trade school focusing on handwork.

Responsibilities

• Develop proficiency in 18th-century Wigmaker, Hairdresser, and Barber techniques through apprenticeship curriculum and object-based reproductions.
• Maintain, style, fit, and care for wigs and hairpieces for daily operations, performances, and programs.
• Collaborate with other Historic Trades and Foundation departments on production projects supporting preservation and interpretive goals.
• Follow safety and security procedures for shop tools, materials, equipment, and worksite.
• Conduct historical research to support craftsmanship and interpretation, and present findings in reports and talks.
• Provide engaging, historically accurate interpretation of the trade and lead interpretive programs and demonstrations.
• Instruct staff and apprentices, develop training curricula, and mentor others to preserve and present historic trades.
