Job summary

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Williamsburg, VA, seeks a Wigmaker Apprentice to rediscover and preserve 18th-century wigmaker, barber, and hairdresser trades. You will interpret skills to the public, mentor others, and advance by completing object-based reproductions, research projects, and interpretive presentations.

The role focuses on hand skills, research, and interpretation with an emphasis on historical accuracy, hospitality, and exceptional service in a live-heritage setting.

Qualifications

  • High school degree/G.E.D. with general knowledge of 18th-century history.
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license with clean driving record.
  • 5-year MVR may be required; age 21+; no serious violations in 36 months.

Responsibilities

  • Develop proficiency in wigmaker, hairdresser, and barber skills through apprenticeship curriculum and reproductions.
  • Maintain and care for wigs and hairpieces for daily operations and performances.
  • Collaborate with Historic Trades and other departments on production projects.
  • Follow safety and security procedures for tools, materials, and worksite.
  • Conduct historical research and present findings via reports and demonstrations.
  • Plan and lead interpretive programs and train staff and interns.
  • Provide exceptional hospitality and customer service to guests.
