Job summary

Summitbsa in West Virginia seeks an experienced river trek supervisor to lead and oversee 5‑day whitewater Treks on the New River Gorge. You will manage staff, ensure safety, and deliver an exceptional Trek experience while aligning with the Scout Oath and Law.

The role includes on‑site supervision, staff training, and equipment maintenance with housing in Staff Camp and a Summit Staff Uniform. Expect 45–55 work hours per week in a dynamic outdoor setting.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age 21+ and experienced documented commercial trip leader on the New River in West Virginia.
  • Competent Class 1-3 whitewater paddler with strong multi-day rafting trip knowledge.
  • Able to obtain Red Cross First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer (training provided).

  • Maintain a clean, organized, inspected, and safe work area.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by SBR leadership.
  • Abide by policies and procedures in the SBR staff handbook.

Job description

Position Overview

Provides leadership and oversight to the river trek staff and program. Supervise, train, manage, and deliver the river trek. Use the river trek as a vehicle to deliver the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

Key Responsibilities
  • Organize/manage 5-day whitewater Treks in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve
  • Serve as Manager on Duty for river trek by assisting with evacuations and providing logistical support.
  • Train, manage, and supervise trek leads in all aspects of trek program and safety.
  • Manage and supervise guests to ensure safety and quality of program.
  • Maintain trek equipment in an organized and good working condition.
  • Model the Scout Oath and Law in daily interactions
  • Maintain a clean, organized, inspected, neat, and safe work area
  • Perform additional duties assigned by SBR leadership
  • Abide by policies and procedures outlined in the SBR staff handbook
Qualifications
  • Minimum age: 21+
  • Required: Experienced and documented commercial Trip Leader on the New River in West Virginia.
  • Required: Competent Class 1-3 whitewater paddler/oarsman. Strong multi-day rafting trip knowledge
  • Able to become Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. (Training provided)
  • Valid driver license and able to obtain a Summit Driving permit.
  • Willing to become a registered Scouting America member (includes background screening)
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Teams for daily work-related communication
Physical & Practical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, and hike up to 8 hours daily and ability to lift/move up to 70 pounds
  • Complete the Annual Health and Medical Record, including height/weight guidelines
  • Housing: 10'x12' platform tent in Staff Camp | Uniform: Summit Staff Uniform | Work Hours: 45-55
