Job summary

Summitbsa in West Virginia seeks a River Trek Program Lead to oversee staff, train crews, and deliver multi-day treks along the New River Gorge. You will supervise trek leads, ensure safety, and maintain equipment while coordinating with the National Park Service on service projects.

Housing and a Summit Staff Uniform are provided, with a 5–6 day trek schedule. A background screening and driving permit are required, and you will represent the Scout Oath and Law daily.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age: 21+.
  • Experienced and documented commercial Trip Leader on the New River in West Virginia.
  • Competent Class 1-3 whitewater paddler/oarsman. Strong multi-day rafting trip knowledge.
  • Able to become Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. (Training provided)
  • Valid driver license and able to obtain a Summit Driving permit.
  • Willing to become a registered Scouting America member (includes background screening)
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Teams for daily work-related communication

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a clean, organized, inspected, neat, and safe work area
  • Perform additional duties assigned by SBR leadership
  • Abide by policies and procedures outlined in the SBR staff handbook

Job description

Position Overview

Provides leadership and oversight to the river trek staff and program. Supervise, train, manage, and deliver the river trek. Use the river trek as a vehicle to deliver the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

Key Responsibilities

Physical & Practical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, swim, and paddle up to 8 hours daily and ability to lift/move up to 70 pounds
  • Complete the Annual Health and Medical Record, including height/weight guidelines
  • Housing: 10'x12' platform tent in Staff Camp | Uniform: Summit Staff Uniform | Work Hours: 5-6 day Trek
