Job summary

UPMC Mercy Health Center in Pittsburgh is seeking a Casual Phlebotomist to support our hospital. The role focuses on inpatient and outpatient specimen collection, with weekend Saturday-Sunday shifts from 4am-10:30am or 4am-12:30pm.

The phlebotomist will work under supervision of Medical Technologists, perform venipuncture, hand hygiene, and enter patient data into the information system, while ensuring accuracy and patient comfort.

Qualifications

• Prior inpatient phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Accurate specimen collection following patient identification procedures.
• Ability to work weekend shifts and engage with laboratory staff professionally.
• Able to perform venipuncture, heelstick and fingerstick as needed.

Responsibilities

• Interact with laboratory customers courteously and respond to inquiries.
• Procure blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick and fingerstick; instruct patients on collection procedures.
• Transport specimens to the appropriate section following safety procedures.
• Enter demographic information and test orders into the information system.
• Train and orient new employees and students as assigned.
• Inform staff of unusual incidents.
• May perform arterial puncture following guidelines.
• Monitor supplies and use reagents cost-effectively.
