Job summary

UPMC Altoona Regional Health Services is seeking a full-time Phlebotomist to perform venipuncture, heelstick and fingerstick specimen collection for inpatients and outpatients. The role supports the BMA Lab and floats to Logan and Ebensburg Labs, with daytime, Monday–Friday shifts.

The position emphasizes accurate data entry, quality control, and adherence to safety and collection procedures; a high school diploma is required and certification is preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Certification from an accredited Phlebotomist or Medical Assistant program preferred.
• Minimum 6 months experience performing phlebotomy preferred.
• Medical terminology knowledge and LIS experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Interact with laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to inquiries.
• Procure blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick and fingerstick; instruct patients as needed.
• Demonstrate dependability and judgment to meet department priorities and authority.
• Transports specimens to the appropriate lab areas following safety procedures.
• Adhere to hospital policies on procedures, quality control, safety and hygiene.
• Enter demographic data, test orders and charges in information systems accurately.
• Train and orient new employees, students and residents as assigned.
• Inform staff and pathologists of unusual incidents; monitor supply usage and costs.
