Job summary

Baxter & Woodman in Chicago, IL, seeks a Water Utility Engineer I to design drinking water and wastewater infrastructure in our Illinois offices. The role offers opportunities to advance in technical design, project management, team leadership, or business development.

Responsibilities include planning and design of municipal systems, hydraulic analyses, permitting, and CIP support, with potential growth across design and multidisciplinary projects.

Qualifications

• Excellent technical writing skills.
• Strong written, verbal, computer, and organizational skills.
• Ability to lead themselves through project design.
• Ability to work in a team environment for both engineering design and contractors.

Responsibilities

• Assist in planning and design of municipal water distribution and sanitary sewer improvements, including pipelines, pumping stations, valves, meters, manholes, and related infrastructure.
• Prepare engineering plans, specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports for utility infrastructure improvement projects.
• Design underground infrastructure improvements using Trenchless Technologies (HDPE, HDD, jack and bore, lining).
• Support development and implementation of utility CIP through project evaluation, prioritization, budgeting, and replacement planning.
• Perform hydraulic analyses and modeling of water distribution systems to support design and master planning.
• Conduct field investigations (SSES, fire flow tests, condition assessments, construction observations).
• Prepare permit applications and coordinate with agencies for project compliance.
• Assist with Rate Studies, Funding Applications, GIS mapping, and large multidisciplinary projects.
