Job summary

City of Statesville (NC) Public Utilities Department seeks a Skilled Laborer - Water Maintenance to perform semi-skilled construction, maintenance and repair tasks in the water/sewer division, using a variety of hand and power tools and equipment. The role requires a high school diploma or GED, 1 year of hands-on tool experience and a valid NC driver’s license (or ability to obtain one within 60 days).

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED; must be at least 18.
• 1 year of experience using power tools in construction work, building maintenance, or water maintenance.
• 1 year of experience operating and maintaining motorized equipment such as a front-end loader or backhoe.
• Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license, or any valid license with ability to obtain NC license within 60 days of establishing residence in NC.

Responsibilities

• Performs manual and semi-skilled tasks related to construction, repair, and maintenance; cut out streets and driveways; backfills and compacts excavated areas.
• Locates utilities on the job, digs out utilities manually or by machine.
• Performs simple measurements; interprets meter readings; performs routine safety inspections.
• Receives parts and materials from warehouse personnel; interacts with utilities customers.
• Transports materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites; sets up and removes warning signs and traffic control devices.
• Operates electronic utility locators, hand and power tools, tampers, jackhammers, fire hydrants, gas monitors, air compressors, generators, chainsaws, and front-end loaders.
