Job summary

The City of Saginaw is seeking a semi-skilled worker for water and sewer system construction, maintenance and meter work. You will install and repair mains, hydrants, and meters, perform field measurements, and record readings while interacting with the public.

Qualified candidates have a high school diploma or GED, a Michigan CDL Class A with air brakes and N endorsement, and a Level S-4 drinking water certification or the ability to obtain it within 24 months.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• Minimum 6 months working as a manual laborer.
• One year of underground construction experience preferred.
• Must possess a valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Group A with air brakes and N endorsement.
• Must possess and maintain Michigan Drinking Water Operator Certification Level S-4; must certify within 24 months if not possessed at hire.

Responsibilities

• Install and remove private water/sewer connections, mains, meter pits, hydrants, valves and water meters.
• Repair, clean, and maintain mains, valves, hydrants, catch basins, manholes, sidewalks, stop boxes.
• Install, repair and replace water meters, turn services on/off; inspect meters; resolve complaints; report issues.
• Record water meter readings; inspect for leaks or tampering; read up to 400 meters manually if needed.
• Construct catch basins, manholes, curbs and sidewalks; set forms and finish concrete.
• Clean catch basins, sewers and manholes; apply treatments as required.
• Perform routine maintenance and inspections of hydrants and water valves; document results.
• Operate a variety of tools and equipment; backfill excavations.
• Shut off hydrants opened unlawfully; interact with public professionally.
• Locate and stake water/sewer mains and appurtenances; use Miss Dig system when needed.
• Assist with yard/stock operations; report field issues to Utilities Foreman.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
