Job summary

The Town of Smithfield, NC, seeks a skilled maintenance professional to lead a crew in water and sewer system installation, repair, and maintenance. You will supervise operations, operate heavy construction equipment, inspect and maintain valves, hydrants, and meters, and ensure safety standards are followed.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED with 5–7 years of related experience, plus certifications in excavation, water distribution, and flagging. CDL is preferred.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or GED with 5–7 years of experience in skilled maintenance and construction, preferably in public utilities, or an equivalent education/experience combination.
• Certification as Competent Person For Excavation, Trenching, and Shoring from NC Department of Labor or OSHA to be secured within 3 months of employment.
• Possession of certification in water collection and sewer distribution.
• Flagger Certification issued by OSHA or NC DOT.
• Valid North Carolina driver’s license; CDL preferred.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates and participates in installation, repair, or replacement of water and sewer lines, and related facilities.
• Supervises and participates in installing water, sewer lines and taps; ensures proper grading.
• Operates construction equipment such as backhoes, loaders, and sewer rodders.
• Maintains, inspects, and repairs valves, manholes, hydrants, and meters.
• Provides on-site training and performance feedback to crew members; enforces safety policies.
• Replaces landscaping damaged during construction; sows grass seed and plants shrubbery.
