Job summary

City of Kalamazoo Public Services is offering internships in Public Services Engineering for students advancing in Civil, Environmental, Traffic, Transportation, or Construction Engineering. Internships provide real-world exposure to design, inspection, budgeting, and public contractor relations within a municipal setting.

Interns will learn construction inspection, plan interpretation, and development of bid packages while working with project teams.

Qualifications

• Must be currently enrolled or a recent graduate within 1 year in a Civil, Environmental, Traffic, Transportation, or Construction Engineering program.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with coworkers, supervisor, and the public.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to learn new software.
• Detail oriented with good time management and organizational abilities.
• Desire to learn construction inspection, plan interpretation, and project documentation.

Responsibilities

• Assist project engineers and managers with project designs.
• Cross reference, verify, and update record data.
• Generate and complete work orders and reports.
• Inspect project construction and ensure compliance with specs and bid documents.
• Interact with contractors, consultants, and the public to provide project information.
• Review drawings and specifications for accuracy and completeness.
• Research and develop strategies for future year projects.
• Coordinate with ROW supervisor and inspect work within ROW.
• Use computer programs to enter data, create drawings, and maintain databases.
