Job summary

The City of South Haven’s Engineering Department offers an internship to support planning, design, inspection, and maintenance of public infrastructure projects. Under supervision, you will assist with roadway, drainage, water and sewer utilities, electric distribution, GIS, and capital improvement tasks, balancing office work with field assignments.

This role emphasizes hands-on learning with AutoCAD, ArcGIS, and Civil 3D, data collection, cost estimates, and project documentation.

Qualifications

• Second year of college pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, construction management, land surveying, geographic information systems, or related field.
• Strong academic standing with coursework in civil or electrical engineering preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and familiarity with ESRI/ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Civil 3D.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the preparation of engineering drawings, maps, and reports using AutoCAD, ESRI/ArcGIS, or similar software.
• Conduct construction observation and field inspections for municipal infrastructure projects and systems (e.g., water/sewer utilities, electric distribution, streets, sidewalks).
• Collect, organize, and analyze field data for municipal infrastructure systems.
• Support the development of cost estimates, bid documents, and project specifications.
• Review development plans and permits for compliance with local codes and engineering standards.
• Assist with public works maintenance tracking and asset management tasks.
• Perform administrative and research tasks as needed to support engineering projects.
• Other duties as assigned.
