Job summary

Cobb County Government is seeking a Utility Mechanic to join the Central Maintenance Division of the Water Department. The role focuses on repairing and maintaining equipment at water reclamation and lift station sites, with mandatory on-call scheduling including weekends and holidays.

You will inspect, troubleshoot, disassemble, overhaul, and reassemble major industrial equipment, test performance, and coordinate with plant personnel.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required, supplemented by vocational or technical training in electrical, plumbing, welding, or other trades.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
• Must obtain Maintenance Technologist III Certification within first year of employment.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventative and scheduled maintenance and repairs on major industrial equipment in the field, including inspection, troubleshooting, disassembly, overhaul, lubrication, and adjustment of pumps, gear reducers, valves, motors, and related components.
• Inspect and maintain equipment, test fluid levels, replace parts, clean and organize shop/work areas, and report faulty equipment.
• Read schematics, disassemble/repair components, diagnose repairs, reassemble and test for proper operation, and coordinate work with plant personnel.
• Troubleshoot, monitor, inspect, maintain, repair, and report issues at lift stations; inspect piping, valves, actuators, and related equipment; manage alarms, tests, and preventive actions.
• Maintain inventory of parts and equipment, verify deliveries, report shortages, and process orders; ensure proper storage, labeling, and documentation.
• Adhere to safety procedures, use safety equipment, and monitor work environment for hazards; set up safety cones and secure storage areas.
• Enter and maintain documentation in computer-based maintenance systems; prepare timesheets, work orders, and maintenance logs.
• Provide emergency coverage as needed and standby per departmental schedules.
