Job summary

Western Piedmont Council of Governments seeks a Natural Resources Manager to oversee the Natural Resources, Environmental Education, and Stormwater programs. This role leads division staff and administers the NPDES Phase II stormwater program across the service area.

The position involves water quality planning, watershed protection, grant development, and technical assistance to local governments, with collaboration across community partners. WPCOG is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Qualifications

  • Degree in environmental sciences or related field required.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Experience in environmental planning and/or zoning for local governments or regional organizations.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience administering federally funded programs preferred.
  • Experience using GIS systems preferred.
  • 2–3 years in civil engineering, site construction, or municipal stormwater management preferred.
  • Hands-on experience interpreting civil plans for BMPs preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Natural Resources, Environmental Education, and Stormwater programs.
  • Supervise the stormwater program administration within the service area.
  • Provide technical assistance to local governments on watershed and stormwater rules.
  • Develop and pursue contract opportunities with governments inside and outside the region.
  • Coordinate with the NC Department of Environmental Quality on larger projects.
  • Develop and implement outreach programs related to stormwater and water quality.
  • Prepare and present at watershed and stormwater committees.
