Job summary

The City of Abilene is seeking a Cross-Connection Control Inspector to join the Water Distribution team. Under general supervision, you will perform field inspections, compliance reviews, and related administrative duties to protect the public water system.

Responsibilities include conducting surveys of new and existing connections, documenting hazards, managing records, and coordinating enforcement actions when needed. A valid Texas driver's license and TCEQ licenses are required.

Qualifications

• Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in cross-connection control, customer service inspections, public water system operations, plumbing, or related field.
• High school diploma or GED required; college coursework preferred in water/wastewater operations.
• Valid Texas driver's license or ability to obtain within 90 days.
• TCEQ Customer Service Inspector (CSI) license or ability to obtain within 12 months.
• TCEQ Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) license or ability to obtain within 12 months.
• TCEQ Class C Water Distribution license is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Conduct customer service inspections and cross-connection surveys as permitted by TCEQ.
• Identify and document cross-connections, hazardous materials, and backflow risks; assess back siphonage and backpressure.
• Maintain electronic inventory of regulated facilities, service connections, and test results.
• Review certificates and test reports for accuracy and compliance; reject deficient reports.
• Issue testing, inspection, delinquency, and corrective-action notices; track deadlines; schedule follow-ups.
• Verify backflow assemblies meet requirements and are properly installed and tested.
• Educate property owners and City staff on cross-connection hazards and testing requirements.
• Operate City vehicle and travel throughout the water service area; document findings and actions.
