Job summary

City of Abilene is seeking a Utility Worker in the Water/Wastewater division. The role involves inspecting, repairing and maintaining wastewater lines, lift stations, and related infrastructure, often driving to sites in a City vehicle.

Qualifications

• Six months experience as Laborer, Utility Worker, or related work is required.
• A high school diploma or GED is required.
• A Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain within 90 days is required.
• A Class A Texas CDL or ability to obtain within 90 days is required.
• Two years of experience for Utility Worker II is required.
• A valid Texas Class A CDL is required for Utility Worker II.
• A valid TCEQ Wastewater Collection II license is required; III is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, clean, repair, install and/or replace damaged Wastewater Collection lines, valves, manhole rings/lids, and pumps.
• Tap sewer lines, maintain lift stations, operate TV monitor and survey camera.
• Travel to various worksites using City vehicle; maintain a safe and productive work site.
• Operate at least one heavy piece of equipment (backhoe, dump truck, sewer stop/jetter, air compressor, vacuum truck).
• Investigate customer complaints related to leaks and sewer issues; coordinate with required personnel to make repairs.

Job description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the immediate or general supervision of a Lead Supervisor or higher; to perform, either alone or within a team,requiredconstruction,maintenanceand operational duties in the assigned Division/Branch of the water and sewer system. The Wastewater Collection Utility Worker may alsoassistwithaccomplishingsome Water Distribution-related tasks.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

These positions do not exercise supervision.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Inspect, clean, repair, install and/or replace damaged Wastewater Collection lines, valves,manholerings/ lids, and pumps Tap sewer lines,maintainlift stations,operateTVmonitorand survey camera, helpmaintainutility property and easements.

Operate aCityvehicle daily to travel to various worksites.

Maintain a safe and productive work site at all times.

Operate at least one of the following: backhoe, dump truck, sewer stop/jetter, air compressor, or vacuum truck.

Operateallthe following: backhoe, dump truck, sewer stop/jetter, air compressor, and vacuum truck.

Investigate customer complaints related to leaks, sanitary sewer overflows,manholesafety, and other issues related to wastewater collection.

Contact and coordinate with required personnel/agencies to make repairs.

Communicate effectively with other employees,customersand supervisors the nature and status of work being performed.

Knowledge of:

Safe driving and heavy equipment operating principles and practices.

The use of general GeographicalInformation System (GIS) applications.

Utility Worker Trainee

Experience:

Six (6) months of experience as a Laborer, Utility Worker, or other related work isrequired.

Utility Worker I

License or Certificate:

A Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License isrequired.

Possession of or the ability to obtain a TCEQ Wastewater Collection I licensewithin one (1) year of employment isrequired.

Utility Worker II

Experience:

Two (2) years of experience comparable to a Utility Worker, isrequired.

License or Certificate:

A valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) isrequired.

A valid TCEQ Wastewater Collection II license isrequired.

A valid TCEQ Wastewater Collection III license is preferred.

Special Requirements:

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

Working outside or in a confinedworkspacewith exposure to cold, heat, noise, chemicals, and hazardous materials.

Ability to travel to different sites.

Availability to work an 8-hour shift during normal businesshours andbe on standby (on call) to work outside normal business hours, as needed.
