Job summary

The City of Chesapeake is seeking a Maintenance Worker – Wastewater Operations to assist in repair, installation, and maintenance of municipal wastewater infrastructure. The role is outdoors, requires a safety-first mindset, and offers on-the-job training.

You will work Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with potential overtime for emergencies. The department emphasizes career progression and practical skill-building within Public Utilities.

Qualifications

• Requires instruction that is sufficient for satisfactory job performance.
• No experience requirement specified; training will be provided.
• Requires a valid driver’s license and driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards.
• Employees may be required to work outside normal hours in response to emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Field support & materials handling: Load/unload gravel, dirt, timber, chemicals, tools, equipment.
• Sewer system maintenance: Assist in clearing mainlines and service laterals; clean catch basins and manholes.
• Grounds & site work: Cut grass/trees, rake leaves, dig trenches; help install pipes.
• Equipment care: Grease pumps, motors, shafts; replace valves; perform wet-well cleaning/light repairs.
• Tools & operations: Operate hand/power tools for debris removal and maintenance tasks.
• Traffic control: Serve as a flagger and help set up safe work zones.
• Customer service: Interact with residents/contractors to provide routine information.
