Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. in Michigan is seeking a hands-on Waste Collection Associate. You will collect solid waste and recyclables from customer sites, load and sort materials, and assist the driver to operate and back the vehicle safely.

The role requires basic reading/writing, good communication, and the ability to follow instructions with limited supervision. Candidates should meet safety standards and be prepared for outdoor, physically demanding work.

Responsibilities

• Collect solid waste/recyclables from customer premises and curbside if applicable.
• Load solid waste into rear or side of waste collection vehicle
• Sort recyclables and deposit materials into appropriate compartments in the truck
• Assist driver in safe vehicle operation by guiding backing and maneuvering
• Operate equipment on truck to compact trash/materials
• Audit waste collection vehicle for proper equipment prior to leaving branch
• Report customer-related problems to driver immediately
• Identify and remove prohibited waste items from carts or cans
• Follow safety and equipment checks; comply with safety rules
• Work with supervisor to improve routing efficiencies
• Maintain predetermined route quality standards
• Wear all PPE at all times (gloves, vest, glasses, boots)
• Exhibit professional demeanor in public and on route
• Keep interior cab and exterior of vehicle clean
• Assist in sorting, cleaning carts, warehouse work, pallet/gaylord placement
• Attend safety and branch meetings
• Perform other duties as required by management
